It's been a great run these past 2+ months. I've spent a lot of time here (more than half an hour just loading and tweaking a single post each time) and I've got fond memories of seeing my thoughts published. But my heart belongs to another. Sorry Blogger, your days are numbrd.

I just watched a video describing how Scott Harrison started charity: water. The organization helps to address the basic need for clean drinking water, something that I have taken for granted for a long time now. The wells that charity: water builds helps to build communities, reduce the frequency of water-borne diseases, and free up the millions of hours lost searching for and transporting water.

Today, I'm launching the "Towards A Better World" category to collect interesting ideas and initiatives I learn about from friends and co-workers, in books and on the web. At Central Baptist Church, Pastor David just completed a tripartite sermon on what the Bible considers true manhood: Leadership, Love and Learning. This sermon is part of a larger series titled "God's Word on Relationships" I honestly was afraid when the series started that there would be too much emphasis on how women should yield to men's authority, but my fears were (mostly) unsubstantiated.

I thought it would be good to share the sermon notes so you could explore what the Bible says about manhood. All credit goes to Pastor David for his great sermons.

In Part One of this series I discussed the motivations and goals that are part of my plan to make a difference as I start a new phase of my life. In this article, Part Two of the series, I will discuss Idealist.org's new initiative and how it could address the problems we face today.

The Initiative
Action Without Borders (AWB), the nonprofit that manages Idealist.org has been in a good position to see the potential that passionate, service-oriented individuals have to make a radical difference in our world. AWB and Idealist.org's mission is to "connect people, organizations, and resources to help build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives."

In recent months I’ve been thinking a lot more about what I want to do with my life – the time I have on this planet, the tools and skills that God has given me, the stores of support that I have from my family, friends and mentors. I believe that it’s a direct result of my whole graduate school application process and I’ll begin with an EF Schumacher quote that I used in my foundational statement of purpose ("foundational" relating to the fact that this version was the barebones structure that I used for all of my applications):

“What sort of education is this if it prevents us from thinking of things to be done immediately?...We must recover the sense that it is the most natural thing for every person born into this world to use his hands in a productive way and that it is not beyond the wit of man to make this possible.”
